Cold Frames
Cold frames are the middle step for your seedlings. Many seeds are started in hotbeds. The shock of going from a hotbed straight into the cold ground can be too much for some seedlings to take. It is best to harden off the seedlings. This process is removing the seedlings from the high temperature of the hotbed and moving it to an enclosed device that will provide sunlight, ventilation and protection from cool nights and wind but get the seedlings waned off of the hotbed. That said, cold frames can be made from practically anything that will protect your seedlings and give them sunlight. You can build one or you could use your mini greenhouse as a cold frame.
Make A Cold Frame
Building a cold frame isn’t very difficult. You will get the best insulation if you put it, at least partially, underground. If you prefer, you can keep your cold frame above ground. It is best if you can make your cold frame face south. You will get the best heating if you can place your cold frame next to a house, but putting it against any other structure will help to protect it and add heat. The main ingredient in your cold frame will be an old window sash. The glass from the window is perfect for letting in sunlight. The window will also decide the size of your cold frame and the dimensions of the rest of your materials. Simply cut sides and a bottom from wood, nail them together, making sure all edges are flush, and add your top (the window) with hinges in the back to swing it open in an upward direction. Make the front of your cold frame lower than the back.
Plastic Cold Frame
You may not wish to build your own cold frame. Plastic cold frames are good options, and there are different types as well. There are hard plastic cold frames that can function just as home-made wood and glass one would. You can put it partially in the ground and use is all through the winter. Additionally, due to the lightweight material, these are usually lighter. If you only plan on growing seedlings during the regular planting season, a soft plastic cold frame may be for you. These stay above the ground and are basically soft clear plastic with very easy construction. These models tend to be cheap as well, costing around thirty dollars.
