Because soil is not used, a medium of growth is needed for the roots of the plants to grow in. The most important factor in the failure or success of a hydroponic garden is the nutrient solution. Many fertizilizers that are available in garden centers do not contain all of the 13 elements necessary for growth because the medium often provides many of them. However this is not always the case and supplements must be purchased. Be sure to always test the pH level to ensure that the acidity level does not go beyond six. pH test kits and modifiers are usually sold where fish supplies are sold.

Another hydroponic supply is the lighting. Like any plant, hydroponic plants need light to grow and photosynthesize. Natural light can be used, but often times a bulb is a necessary hydroponic gardening supply. The wattage of the bulb and the time that the light shines on the plant is dependant on what type it is. Often times, commercial hydroponic growing supplies include grow light movers. The light moves across an area of plants reducing the cost of additional lights and electricity.

Of course the plant must be placed in something. Different varieties of containers are also sold. A plastic box with drain holes is usually the best method so that water can drain without drowning the plants. While these can be bought, rubbermaid containers work just as well as a discount hydroponic supply.

Many hydroponic systems work off of timers. A pump may be connected to a timer to regulate the water schedule. Make sure that the pump is clear so as not to have a blockage by the build up of algae.
