Portable Greenhouses
Portable greenhouses are essentially used during the regular gardening season and just beyond. They do not have the ability to grow plants all year long the way regular full-sized greenhouses do, but they are significantly cheaper and take up much less room. They typically come with a frame and some durable polyethylene or similar material sheet covering. They basically look like large tents that you can stand up in, with shelves on either side to hold your plants, and a front door. The plastic covering does help to capture sunlight, heat the inside and keep it humid, just the way the panels do on a full-sized greenhouse. They don’t have electrical sockets or the space to hold heating and cooling devices, but they’re easy to put together. They are ideal to set up in spring to get a head start on the planting season, to contain seedlings throughout the growing year, and extending the growing year into fall. They don’t have all the growing capability of a stationary greenhouse, but a portable greenhouse may suit your needs and with most of them costing about one hundred dollars as opposed to the eight hundred to couple thousand dollars you’ll spend on an all-year greenhouse.
Portable Hobby Greenhouse
Just as all greenhouses come in different shapes and sizes, and all portable greenhouses come in different shapes and sizes, and even mini greenhouses come in different shapes and sizes, so do portable hobby greenhouses. In general, when you see the term hobby greenhouse it is going to be typically about 12”x12”x12”. They usually look like small tents, similar in appearance to regularly sized portable greenhouses. Unlike their larger portable counterparts, hobby greenhouses are usually low to the ground and have floors, which help keep cold from the ground out and they are cheaper. A general rule of thumb with greenhouse buying is the bigger it is, the more expensive it is. Unless of course you build it yourself, but portable hobby greenhouses usually cost between thirty to sixty dollars, so the low cost will make this a great option for many gardeners.
Build Your Own Portable Greenhouse
Building a portable greenhouse isn’t all that difficult endeavor. To make it portable, it basically needs to be light enough to carry. A larger one could be built with a basic wooden structure and plastic covering. It is possible to build a greenhouse light enough to be portable with glass paneling, but it would have to be small enough to compensate for the extra weight the glass will add.
